officer teresa may

Teresa checked into the precinct before heading home to catch the chief fresh. Everyone who saw her tried pulling her aside to get the 411 on the hunt for the girls, but all she could do was shake her head, tell them she hadn’t slept yet, and make a beeline for Chief Davenport’s office.

Someone she snubbed said, “Rude,” to which she replied, “Yes, but not on purpose.”

The truth was that everything hurt; she could hardly walk, and she felt muscle, fat, and loose skin all hanging off her bones like oversized clothes. Worse, her hair and hands were dirty, and she reeked of body odor, reminding her of her younger brother when he was going through puberty. Back then, he used to work out with weights for hours, then grab her and shove her face into his armpits while telling her, “That’s what a man smells like!”

She managed to push him away and say, “If that’s how all men smell, I’m going to be a lesbian when I grow up!”

“Too late!” he said, snubbing her.

She did not grow up to be a lesbian, but she had managed to avoid most men. Instead of dating, she went to the police academy, bought a dog for company, and made a few close friends. For now, that was enough.

“It seems this case is going to keep you busy,” Chief Davenport said when he saw her. He waved her in, getting a good look at her. “Best you make some progress before folks bring up the other girls again.”

“The other girls, Chief?”

He rolled his eyes and said, “Oh, c’mon, you know.”

She frowned and said, “Coach is already talking about it. Same with Earl. I tried to put the kibosh on it, but it’s already a topic.”

“But did they say it?” he asked.

She shook her head because neither man said the words serial killer. “Would they be wrong if they did?” Teresa asked.

“No, Officer May,” Chief Davenport replied in a curt tone. “I don’t think they would be wrong.”

“If we were dealing with a serial, wouldn’t we have a workable MO? I mean, can we match any of this to previous patterns?”

“You tell me,” Davenport said, pinching his features like he hated the entire discussion.

“I can’t say for sure, so I suggest we treat it as a case of missing persons. If that changes, maybe we’ll have a different conversation then.”

“Don’t be so damn naïve,” he grumbled. “You know this is just like the others.”

“Is there anything wrong with having optimism, Chief Davenport?”

He breathed deeply through his nose, narrowed his unblinking eyes, then breathed audibly and said, “Optimism is something others get to have. But not you. You know how bad people can be, Officer May.”

“Missing girls don’t always equal dead girls,” she said.

“That’ll be the case with my friend’s girls.”

She stared at him long enough to show her grit but not so long that it came off as a challenge to his authority. For the last twelve hours, she had tried to
